Protect yourself against scammers

The Federal Government’s National Anti-Scam Centre is encouraging everyone to stop, check and protect themselves and others who may fall victim to scams through emails, phone calls and other avenues.

The centre’s Scamwatch website has information about the different types of scams, tips on how to avoid them and what to do if you have already been scammed.

The website encourages everyone who may come across a suspicious phone call, email or other to:
** Stop – Don’t give money or personal information to anyone if you are unsure. Say no, hang up the phone or delete the email.
** Check – Scammers pretend to be from organisations you know and trust. If you’re not sure, call the official phone number of the organisation to check. Do not rely on a phone number the scammer may provide. Find the correct number of the organisation elsewhere.
** Protect – Act quickly if something feels wrong. If you have had money or personal information stolen contact your bank or relevant provider immediately. Help others by reporting scams to www.scamwatch.gov.au

If you’ve had money or personal information stolen contact your bank or credit card provider immediately. If you’ve been scammed or have provided personal information you can also phone the Federal Government’s IDCARE agency on 1800 595 160. IDCARE offers a range of services, including counselling, support, and guidance for victims of identity theft and cybercrime.
